Breakout is the third studio album by pop singer and actress Kara Cyrus, released on April 1, 2004 through Blackout Records. Cyrus had begun writing new music while touring throughout 2003, and began working with various producers and writers whom she had not worked with before in hopes of finding a sound she felt better suited her personality. Breakout features elements of dance and pop music, driving Cyrus away from the country themed sound of her previous album. Numerous tracks on the album also display elements of rock, such as the title track.

First released in 2004, Breakout has been re-released numerous times since its release due to the amount of success it had. The lead single, "Party In the U.S.A.", became Cyrus' second number one single in the US, and reached number one in numerous other countries. The second single, "Fly On the Wall", matched the success of the previous single, and helped raise album sales greatly. Following the success of the third and fourth singles, "7 Things" and "Breakout", the album was re-released as "The Platinum Edition" worldwide, featuring new tracks. To promote the re-release, new songs were put on the album, including the fifth single "Time of our Lives", which reached number one in the US as well as other countries.

The sixth single, "Obsessed", was only released in certain territories, and was moderately successful. Following this, the album was released yet again as "Breakout: All Access Pass" feturing more new songs as well as a bonus DVD featuring music videos and live performances, as well as behind the scene footage. The album was later re-released in January of 2007 exclusively in Japan, with the seventh single "Kicking & Screaming" being released to promote the latest edition of the album.

Breakout has proven to be a commercial success, debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 with sales exceeding 300,000 copies. After holding the top spot for numerous weeks, the album was eventually certified 7x Platinum in the US, for sales exceeding seven million copies in the US alone. It went on to sell over 15 million copies worldwide, making it her most successful album to date. The album also led to Cyrus performing on her Wonderland Tour, which would later become her highest grossing tour, and the highest grossing tour for Blackout Records to date.
